Remember Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Oh Hiya,

Meg here, wishing you a happy fall! October is here and as you may know, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Showing support for the research and fundraising for breast cancer is incredibly important, and your office is a wonderful place to “go pink.” These are some of my favorite ways to spread awareness for the cause and support finding a cure.

breast cancer

  • Organize a team for a Breast Cancer Awareness walk in your community. Not only will you bring together folks from your office for the event, it’s a great opportunity for you to spread some philanthropy inside your office. If you’re not able to put together a full team for the event, put together a group of team members to volunteer. Volunteering and participating in your community walk can become a tradition for your office.
  • Adding a few accessories to your desk is a great way to start a conversation, as well. During October, I always make sure that I have my Pink Ribbon Retractable Gel Ink Pen for taking notes during meetings. It may be a simple thing but it’s a small way to show support daily. If you’re looking to raise awareness and keep the conversation going throughout the year, this Breast Cancer Awareness Desk Pad Calendar is a great addition to your desk. You may be surprised at the difference these items can make.
  • Another great way to make an impact is through a month long, in-office fundraiser. Whether you decide to hold an event or keep a donation bowl in the office throughout October, every bit counts! Incentivizing coworkers to raise a set amount is sure to lead to be success. It’s also a good idea to be clear that donating isn’t mandatory, just encouraged.

While there have been some wonderful breakthroughs in research, there is still a long way to go and every bit of support counts toward Breast Cancer Awareness. There are quite a few ways to show support and spread awareness within your office and these ideas are just a few of the great options out there. For more ways to go Pink this October take a look at these ideas from the Susan G. Komen foundation.

Revamp Your Note Taking

Oh Hiya! Meg here and I know better than most that note taking can be monotonous and not always effective. There are so many different styles of note taking for different situations, which can ensure that your notes are useful. Here’s a short list of every day office meetings and my favorite ways to take notes for each of them:note taking

  • The Brainstorming Meeting
    • In a meeting where there will lots of participation and idea building, it’s important that each member of the team is up to date. I always use a dry erase board so ideas can be quickly written down and visible to each team member. We don’t always hold these meetings in the same room so I like to use the Total Erase Reversible Mobile Easel. It’s so easy to move around the office and it’s big enough that we can fit every idea from our meeting on the board with space to spare.
  • The Board Meeting
    • In a large meeting like a board meeting, I usually volunteer to take notes which are later handed out to everyone. In times like this, I need to make sure that my notes are clearly written so everyone can make sense of them when taking a second look. To make sure my notes are clear and legible, I use my Fine Tip Permanent Marker. It writes so smoothly and I’m never left guessing what letters or numbers I wrote in a hurry.
  • The Team Meeting
    • Usually when our team gets together we run through a quick weekly recap of our to-do lists and upcoming projects. The notes I take in these meetings are purely for my own use so I like to jot them down on my American Pride Legal Pad. I can easily keep track of what projects are coming up and what revisions need to be made on current assignments. The legal pad is just the right size to fit all my notes without being too cramped.

Taking notes is a necessary part of office life, but I’ve found it’s made much easier when you have the proper tools for note taking. I hope my list helps you to keep neater notes for every meeting you have on your schedule. For a few more handy tips for note taking take a look HERE.

Until next time, Meg

5 Item Meg Always Has On Her Desk

Oh Hiya!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve found that stocking your desk is more difficult than it seems! There are so many gadgets that can make the work day easier, but you only have so much desk space! A cluttered desk is distracting, but you also don’t want to be running to the office supply closet every day.

Untitled design (7)

I’ve broken it down to 5 of my favorite items I always have on my desk!

Pens: Even if your job is mostly electronic, you always need to have pens handy! The BIC Comfort Grip Medium Point Round Stic Pens keep to the basics and allow you to jot down notes and scribbles whenever you need. I always try to keep at least 5 pens handy at my desk, in case I misplace one or in case a coworker accidentally walks away with one.

Post Its: Having a quick place to jot down notes or messages is vital at any desk.  The Post-it Pop-up Cape Town Value Pack offers different sizes and colors to keep your notes organized and easy to read. Post its are perfect writing quick notes without wasting an entire piece of paper of notepad. They can also easily stick to relevant documents, your planner, or the backs of your coworkers.

Paperclips: Nothing is more important in an office than being organized. Paperclips keep all your relevant documents together without the need to staple and rip anything! The Business Source Paper Clip pack loads you and your entire staff up with paperclips for all your vital documents.

Binders: Organize even further with binders like the Avery Blue Circle Cover Designer View Binder. Binders help organization because they can hold all your relevant documents and be easily labeled and stored. I always keep one or two empty binders in my desk in case there is a new project that falls in my lap.

Batteries: We always need power! Batteries are always the hardest supply to find in the closet, so I make sure to always keep them handy in my desk. Practically everything requires batteries now a days and work simply cannot function if our technology is dead. The Energizer AA Size Alkaline General Purpose Battery pack will load you up so you will always have power in a pinch!

So stock up your desk with these 5 office essentials and be extra productive!

Until next time,

Meg

Say Goodbye To Your Messy Workspace.

Oh Hiya! Meg here, to talk about keeping your office organized! Nothing is worse for productivity than a messy workspace. I know better than anyone how hard it is to get started organizing when you’re looking at a mess, but with these tips I promise you’ll be motivated to get tidy in no time!

  • Toss It Out- it’s so easy to keep to-do lists, old documents and papers, and even knickknacks for far too long. Take some time to go through the papers, files, and lists on your desk to sort through what you need to keep and what can be tossed out. You’d be surprised at how much neater your space can look after a good deep clean!

  • Check that Schedule- I’ve found myself writing one too many sticky notes with dates and times for important meetings. Pretty soon, I’ve run out of free space at my desk! Take care of those sticky notes in a snap with this adorable At-A-Glance Monthly Desk Pad Calendar (AAGDMD16632). Of course, I picked out the one with the adorable puppies for my desk.

  • Desktop Redesign- Chances are, it’s been a while since you’ve reorganized your desktop. Take a minute to re-organize, and redesign if you will, your desk. Switch things around to create a space that feels new and you’ll be motivated to keep it looking great. I’ve just put a new organizer, the Bankers Box Stor/Drawer Steel Plus (FEL-00311), on my desk to store my mail and loose papers and it’s made such a difference!

  • Don’t Forget the Drawers- It’s easy to focus on the surface and forget about the drawers at your desk. This is a full cleaning of your space, so buckle down and sort through your drawers. It can help to use drawer organizers to keep wayward paperclips, staples, and sticky notes in their place.

  • Keep a List- Keep a single list of all the things you have to do each day. Whether it’s a notepad or a single sheet of paper, you’ll stay organized and on task when you have a list and a neat desk. I’ve found I’m more motivated to jot down a note if I have a smooth writing pen, like the MR Gel Ink Pen, from the Animal Collection (PIL91234). I chose the White Tiger print, to add some pizzazz to my pen!

Now it’s time to congratulate yourself! Organizing your workspace is no easy feat, but after you’ve conquered this list, I’m confident you can take on anything. Enjoy your new workspace and remember; a clean desk is a productive desk.

School Supplies

It’s that time of year again. The pencils are getting sharpened, the notebooks are being bought in every color imaginable, and school is beginning once again. It can be hard to stay on top of everything, and Porter’s Office Products is here to help. When it comes to being prepared for the school year with all the necessary supplies there are many ways to accomplish that.

Make a List of Everything You Need

Making a list will ensure that you purchase what is needed and not simply what you might want. Make it as detailed as you desire; creating a plan will help make the process smoother and more enjoyable for all. Paired with this is the importance of trying to budget and plan accordingly. At http://shop.portersop.com/Browse.aspx we can help you find exactly what you are looking for, and even create a personalized favorites list for everything your child needs.

Involve the Kids

Involving the kids helps them to see what is needed for school and how it will directly help them. This is a great way to get the returning students excited for school and ready to learn. Help them pick out supplies in their favorite color, determine if you could help donate to a back-to-school fund for other children in need, or assist in packing their backpack the night before.

Personalize

Take involving the kids one step further- help them personalize their items. Whether it is stickers, labels, or their own hand-drawn designs, help them make the items their own.

Designate a School Supplies Area

Find a space that works for you and keep all school supplies in one centralized location. This helps relieve the stress of not knowing where to find items and makes everything organized and easy to access.

Finding a one-stop store for your school needs can be a definite priority at this time of year. Our store showcases all the needed school supplies for a worry-free school year. From pens and highlighters to notebooks and planners, we have it all. What we do not house in our immediate store can be ordered through our catalog and shipped overnight for next day delivery.
